Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease originated by a newly discovered virus known as coronavirus. Coronavirus is a family of virus that causes illness such as respiratory diseases or gastrointestinal diseases. Respiratory disease can range from the common cold to more severe diseases e.g.:
- Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV)
- Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV)
This virus name is as per its appearance under a microscope. The virus contains of a core of genetic materials enclosed by an envelope with protein spikes. This gives it the appearance of a crown. The meaning of the word corona is “crown” in Latin.
